So you've finally decided that it is time to stop piling things up in corners and get organized. You need to maximize your space and find solutions. Now is the time to get busy and get your usable square footage back. The first thing you need to do is determine what to keep, what to trash and what to donate. After you have made this determination, it is time to take inventory of the storage space in your home.

Do you have an attic, a garage or a basement? These are places where you can house the things you would like to keep if the humidity and other factors make them suitable for storage. You will need to put the items into clear plastic containers with labels. This will keep moisture from getting inside of them. By doing this, you will also be able to reference your items when you need them.

If you do not have a basement, garage or an attic, you can create the space. Look into your largest closet and determine if you have additional space at the bottom or top. If you look at the top of your closet, chances are that you can go up higher with storage. Take advantage of it and place your containers on the top shelves. There is available space under the bed that is often overlooked. You can find storage space in the kitchen too. Think about moving things around in the bottom cupboards or perhaps checking the pantry. You may find extra square footage there that you had not banked on.

So you have looked all over the house and you still cannot find any place to unload a single container? Take a look at the walls. You can store all of the containers against a single wall. Make it more visually attractive by using modular wall storage units and putting your items in decorative plastic boxes or baskets. Alternatively, you can pile the containers up the wall in a uniform fashion, making sure that the labels are facing out, and drape curtains over the front of them to create the illusion of a bank of windows. By searching in odd places and utilizing the walls, you can create usable storage space which you had no idea that you had.
